Duet

Duet is a semi improvisational piece performed by a 3D printer and accompanied by a sound designer. The core of the piece is a musical composition designed in the form of a 3D object, the sound module. The sound module guides the voice of the 3D printer. This is to say, as the 3D printer is printing it makes particular sounds. These sounds are the printer’s song. As it sings the sound designer records. These audio recordings are transformed into MIDI files which are then given instrumentation. These MIDI files plus live loops become the voice of the sound designer. Together the duet is performed in real time. The 3D printer sings as it prints and the designer shapes and samples the sound into a quadraphonic listening experience. Those participating in the piece are enveloped in sound, bringing them into the song of the the machine.
