Owl Dreaming from Digital Walkabout

There is an invisible network of pathways that meanders across the Australian continent. The indigenous people know these as songlines. Aboriginal creation myths tell of legendary totemic beings who wandered over the land in the Dreamtime singing out the name of everything that crossed their paths - birds, mammals, plants, rocks, waterholes, and other natural phenomenon. They sang the world into being.

I am not Aboriginal. I have never walked the paths left by the rainbow serpent. I come from a digital culture where the geography is a sprawling landscape of information. I do sense that there are echoes of the Aboriginal Dreamings within our contemporary condition.

This project, Digital Walkabout, studies how we make connections and find meaning within our environment. Are there songlines that trace their way through the world wide web? Do we sing the internet into being? Can we navigate this vast territory of information guided by song? How does this song bring the territory into being? Within this project I hope to connect who we are, to where we are, so that we might form a better understanding of what it all means.
